Are You a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?
Almost anyone that has cosmetically flawed teeth but is otherwise in good oral health will be a suitable candidate for porcelain veneers. If you have periodontal disease or are suffering from tooth decay, those dental issues may need to be addressed before you can be considered an appropriate candidate for porcelain veneers.
About the Porcelain Veneers Process
There are three fairly simple steps to the porcelain veneers process: the consultation, the preparation, and the placement. During the consultation, Dr. Reger will give you detailed information about porcelain veneers, address any questions or concerns you might have, and evaluate your candidacy for treatment. If you decide that porcelain veneers are right for you, you will come in for a second visit, during which Dr. Reger will carefully remove a small amount of enamel from the surfaces of the teeth to be treated. This is necessary in order to create space for the porcelain veneers. We will then make an impression of your teeth to send out to our trusted dental laboratory, where your porcelain veneers will be created according to exact specifications.
During your third visit to our cosmetic dentistry practice, your custom porcelain veneers will be placed on your teeth. Before bonding them into place, Dr. Reger will check to ensure that they fit properly and blend in seamlessly with your surrounding natural teeth. If adjustments need to be made, they will be made at this point. Next, your teeth will be cleaned and etched to achieve a good bonding surface. The porcelain veneers will then be permanently bonded to your teeth, and you will have a beautiful new smile!
Benefits and Risks of Porcelain Veneers
There are many benefits to using porcelain veneers to rejuvenate your smile:
- They look very natural; like natural tooth enamel, porcelain is translucent, so veneers blend in perfectly with your surrounding teeth.
- For most patients, porcelain does not irritate the gums.
- Porcelain is strong and durable.
- Porcelain veneers are highly stain resistant.
Although they rarely occur, there are some potential risks associated with porcelain veneers. Some of the potential risks include heightened tooth sensitivity, potential decay of the veneers if not cared for well, and the possibility that the veneers could become dislodged. These risks can be minimized by maintaining a good oral hygiene regimen and by not chewing on ice, pen caps, and other hard objects that could damage the veneers.
